Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris Review

We will be talking about Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris gameplay, features and overall review.

I felt like I needed to get my hands on the game for myself just to see if there's more to it than was already shown so I took a trip down to the Bandai Namco offices last week just they give the game a try.

I was hoping that I'll get to try the more polished version of the game that the developers were using in their previous stream but instead it seems to be the same as the very early event built that was playboy Tokyo Game Show last year.

So after seeing that I wondered is there really a need for me to make another video about it but surprisingly now I've had a chance to play it for myself I found out a lot more about the game than I expected.

I had access to the game for roughly three hours so that gave me more than enough time to dig into it and understand how things worked.

And now that I've tried it I can say that if you've seen gameplay from other places and you thought the person playing it didn't know.

What they were doing don't blame them at all the 10 to 20 minutes they probably had to play it was definitely not enough time to really a feel for how everything works in this builds current state.

It feels like you need to go out of your way to understand how the gameplay works and it's probably why they made it.

So in this version you don't actually die when you lose all of your health since if they didn't enable god mode and you tried to play this while having no idea what you were doing you would die very fast so firstly based on the time.

That I've spent with the game I can say that the combat system is good but it's also very clunky and slow when you first start playing it's pretty hard to understand why they weren't for a combat system that does seem slow pace at first.

If you haven't actually tried it for yourself but when you learn what to do the combat becomes much faster and your choices will be more reactionary and meaningful it also has the potential to have the best melee combat in the sorta online games.

But that's if they give it enough polish before release even though this is still an early build and they've already made improvements past the version that I played I can still get a feel for what they were aiming for this new combat system at first.

Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris Gameplay

It seemed like it would be the same as hollow fragment or hollow realization but actually feels very different to play if the gameplay is still the same on release then we can say goodbye to the days of crazy long skill trains.

And buff spam from the previous games one thing that stood out to me was how much of an impact your partner makes to the way the combat feels.

Since it doesn't seem like you'll be able to constantly change skills together on your own anymore it feels like you'll need to use your partner as an extension of your main character for skill chains.

When you and your partner use sword skills one after another within a short timeframe it would trigger a chain burst that will deal additional damage if you then continuously use sword skills you can increase the levels of the burst.

And increase its damage I'm sure there will be parts of the game where you're controlling one character but for the most part seemed you have a partner character with you.

In Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris, you have a lot of control over what moves your partner's use and when they use them so in battles it seems like you should go in with the mindset that you're really controlling two characters at once rather than just one.

We haven't been showing character progression yet and in the majority of the gameplay videos we've been shown the characters are lower level and don't seem to have access to a lot of their skills.

But it does feel like it will be a good idea to give partners skills that complement the character you're using or skills that will be helpful in creating chambers and combos in this game.

It seems like you need to be very deliberate with the skills you want to use them when you use them the SP that's needed to use your sword skills seems to recover fairly quickly when you're using normal attacks on the enemy.

So you should always be able to use the skills you need when you need to use them as long as you keep pressure on the enemies with normal attacks.

You can cancel your normal attacks and sword skills into Sacred Hearts or magic to create longer combos and keep enemies juggle in midair for longer a lot of the combat seems to be based on timing.

And counter attacking enemies and they leave themselves open and vulnerable so you need to be aware of what your enemies are doing so you can god break block or parry them depending on the situation blocking an enemies attack will reduce the amount of damage.

You take drastically but if you attempt to block an attack that has god break properties your god will be broken leaving you vulnerable for a few seconds you can also to evade attacks.

But another method is using a parry if you tilt the movement stick forwards just as an enemies melee attack is about to hit you up you'll parry their attack and throw them off balance this will open up opportunities for a counter attack.

And what increase your ass gauge so you can pull off powerful finishing moves you can also freeze time to check an enemy's health and to assign commands to your party members.

But one addition to this mode that I didn't notice previously was the ability to have a tiny glimpse into the future and preview what will happen once you disable time freeze they reminded me a bit of them monado powers in xenoblade chronicles.

And it's a cool idea but if it does make it into the final game I'm not sure if it's something I'll consider using personally but it does seem like a good addition for people that like to play a bit more strategically.

So now that I've told you about all the things I noticed about the game while playing let me give you a little demonstration of how the combat looks now I understand how everything works.

Once you get the hang of the basic controls and understand what the skills do the combat system really does come together and battles flow as you'd expect them to.

But like I said earlier this version of the game is outdated and based on the footage that's been shown by the developers the game isn't a much more polished state and appears to be faster paced.

But I still hope to try a newer version of the game just to see how much it improves for myself I was worried about the gameplay when I first started playing.

But now I'm actually looking forward to Alice's ational Icarus there's still a lot about the game that needs to be shown like their progression systems how the equipment works.

And other things you can do so hopefully they'll start talking about those things soon but that's all from me today I did spent quite a while playing the game.
