In this article we will also talk about Moons of Madness Review, Gameplay and Walkthrough. Moons of Madness is a self styled as a cosmic horror sort of experience game. It's set on the moon there's a mystery going on you need to figure it out and get to the bottom of that. So I played for a couple of hours and I can tell you this it is a competent game it's obviously not a huge triple entry from this particular studio yet it's solid bugs don't seem to be an issue no crashes very good just straight out of the gate it didn't go to early access or anything like this.

So this is a technical marvel in this modern era so I think that's worth mentioning and it seems solid in what it does like its storytelling is pretty cool the voice acting is actually really on point the the look of it and the sort of environmental immersion very cool. So let's say all the parts of the pie all the ingredients are really good fantastic and solid especially if you're writing if you're into this sort of game this is probably a no brainer if you like outlast and that sort of stuff you probably really dig this game.

So I get that out of the way but somewhere almost objectively this is a cool game but I have some serious misgivings and it makes me want to sort of discuss that at greater length. Now this is in my estimation my understanding this is what you would call a walking simulator and now they've jazzed it up with a little bit of extra stuff but I think at its heart it really is a walking simulator. There's not a lot of stakes involved you can die and we'll get to that in a little bit but essentially it is very basic puzzling.

As you follow the marker to the thing pick that up take it back to open the other thing so it's not puzzling in so far as it's again it's linear stuff it leads you from point to point. Now the thing is I really dislike the idea of a walking simulator if we're talking about grander theory about broad strokes so for those that don't really understand a walking simulator is pretty much what it sounds like it's a disparaging nickname that's been given to this sort of genre of game that are coming in where it's not really a game.

You don't really play it what it it's more of an interactive story I suppose where you hold W in the most disparaging examples and the earliest examples as well but you pretty much just walk through from story point to story point now I have issue with that and I think it's really worth discussing because I asked myself if you're gonna do this if you're going to create a walking simulator which is a very bare bones barely a game delivery system for your story.
Why not just make it a standalone story why not just make a a webseries or something like that and I think  the fact of that question being the logical first step when it comes to discussing walking simulators it sort of exposes the issue in that most walking simulators kind of crap as far as the story goes it's half baked it's written by someone that's you know probably better off doing Twilight fan fiction you know it's just not really up to snuff so I find this is my experience obviously very subjective very much my opinion.

So as stated it is essentially a walking sim it's really well done one it's quite polished and as far as the linear gameplay puzzles like you know walk over here to find the password walk over there to put in the computer but it's probably the master class of walking sim but again for me personally it's still a walking sim and that still doesn't really help.

Now a couple of other quick points it does some cardinal sin rod like absolute that you cannot buy I don't think you can forgive in the horror genre I was actually talking to a friend about you know what's the best horror games we played and our short lease ended up being things like like Bioshock which is funny because bioshock's not necessarily a horror first but that's probably why it's such a good horror game because it's a game first with horror components thrown in now and then if you just bash your audience for 10 hours of horror straight it's an exhausting horrible experience even like half life 2 is a fantastic car game because there are sections that are horror.

But there's also a solid game behind but things like outlast and and layers of fear and all that I don't love them because they stray so close to just you're almost on Rails to be beaten and subjugated to horrible horror. Anyway the cardinal sins that happened in this one jump scares so much and very early in this happens within the first like 10 minutes of playing this game you're getting some real in your face jump scares and the thing that I hate the most I think it's the cheapest thing ever where the monster grabs you by the head grabs the camera and just jams it up in your face right one.

I just think you know in a platform where control is everything because you're playing a game you're using a controller to grab control off of you uncontested to shove a monster's face in your face I think just is like a fundamentally wrong thing to do when it comes to actual video games so that's number one number two is there's a chase sequence there's a monster chasing me a couple of hours in and I've come across this in other games.

I know it happens in sort of outlast and it's this sort of thing where you just have to run along a path right and you will come to a junction because there will be a left and a right why do you go down this vent or do you go down that corridor right you have no leverage ability skill foresight there is nothing more than a coin flip in that moment as to where you go is that game play like what is it actually if you have to think about I get.

I guess it's more like a coin flip at least you've you're betting on horses and that you could do research and that sort of stuff in this case it's giving you a 50 - 50 coin flip left or right one is the correct answer and the other one you die and then you reset to a checkpoint. I think that is the most fundamentally that's one of the worst things you can possibly put into a video game and pass it off as gameplay.

So anyway that really irks me that these things exist in this in this game absolutely not cool at all but I'm willing to admit that this whole genre exists people like these games I use outlast as an example our lives a little bit different because while that does a lot of these cardinal wrongs of horror of jamming your face up in it and making you do chase sequences it does actually have that investigative managing batteries through your phone or like so I don't particularly like it but I'm not necessarily saying it's not without its gameplay merits but this is very much on Rails it's done already a couple of things wrong but it throws me because it does so much really right as far as sort of your characterization you graphics you will building.

So you know I don't know I if you're a fan of this genre you're gonna like this if you're not you're gonna hate it just like me. One other thought on cosmic horror real quickly because this thing that's why I played it because I'm a humungous cosmic horror specifically Lovecraft Cthulhu because he's the granddaddy of all that sort of stuff. 

Now just cosmic horror 101 is it's about something that is incomprehensible right consider the idea of a horror so horrifying that it is beyond the human condition and understanding and that in and of itself is horrifying because a lot of horror comes around the unknown and the not knowing the unknown right so that's sort of what cosmic horror is this. This is a creature feature it is a jump scare there's some tentacles thrown in which quite often you see in Cthulhu stuff but that's not what cosmic horror is that's just tentacles you know.

Final Words

So there's some sort of imagery in here that you might see in cosmic aura but at the end of the day and I'm not going to give the plot away too much but essentially there seems to be some sort of monster influence growing growing and gaining momentum through the colony but my point is it is a comprehensive not comprehensive bull event that is creating this horror and monster right so if you are in this situation and even the characters in the situation they're going oh what's going on here but you're looking at and you're piecing it together and this is making a bit more sense over here and that's not really that's not the heart of actual cosmic horror this is like physical horror.

There's things that getting in your face and scaring you and killing you and grabbing you and that sort of stuff and that's where the real horror loop comes from in this whereas cosmic horror is supposed to deal with lofty ideals that really make your brain do backflips and they go just beyond you comprehending that's kind of what's fun about cosmic horror. So yeah look it sounds like I'm bashing on this game and when you say it out loud there's a lot of parts to this that I really don't like but I can't deny in its field if you want to call it a game of walking sim horror games. It's probably the best one so take that and and do with it what you will but that's just my thoughts.
