Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30 is a complete disaster it's what and tear into this thing and find out what exactly makes it such well. The first thing you notice is how wildly all over the place the visuals are the environments themselves actually look fairly good. There's not much except hedgerows and town escapes to deal with but they put in a decent amount of detail and the actual visual quality of the environments themselves is generally pretty solid.
The problem is just about everything else outside of the modelling which is generally pretty well done the animations are mostly pretty weak and you do end up with quite a lot of inaccuracies with regards to the weapon handling in particular which ends up looking ridiculous most of the time and the rest the animations merely suffice. They don't do anything more or less than that then you move over to things like texture quality.

In other words yes the game came out over a decade ago but it actually looks more dated than it is luckily when you move over to the sound design you get the voice acting to help bring things up which they've actually done a rather good job with ought to admit but the sound effects are utterly pathetic. I mean listen to the way the car ninety eight rifle sounds it is obviously from a generic sound pack and it sounds incredibly wimpy to boot and if it were just one or two weapons that sounded like that I'd be able to overlook it but it's almost every single weapon in the entire game that sounds utterly pathetic and outright generic even the explosions in the cannon fire and everything sounds generic and wimpy and it ends up being incredibly hard to get immersed.

What really matter here are the story and the gameplay and I was willing to put aside the lackluster presentation to focus on these things because they were the parts that were most you play a sergeant Matt Baker of the hundred and first Airborne Division specifically. The story follows you as you drag your squad along through the various skirmishes and battles that you run into on the way to the battle of bloody gulch starting at the invasion on day and if let's say fairly a high degree of emphasis on what it seems to think is character development, which consists of introducing someone only to have them die off in the next mission because we gotta have a shocking moment or we've got to have some heartfelt moment where those Gerry bastards managed to kill a lot of our owns and we have to avenge him such like that the problem with that is that the game does an absolutely terrible job of getting you attached to these characters to give you a prime example.

One of the characters in the game is George he is the tank driver that you run into fairly early on into the game and the game tells you that he's Matt's friend nuther is showing it in gameplay or anything like that but no bites telling you that he's your friend with a voiceover that happens before the mission begins as far as the player is concerned George is just the tank guy he has barely any personality to him and you have no reason to give a crap about this character at all likewise the game opens up with a sequence where all hell is breaking loose at the battle of bloody Gulch and you get to see several of your squad mates get mowed down by machine guns and various mortar fire and tank fire and things like that and so you're sitting there throughout the entire game going okay.

They're dead men why should I give a crap the game tells you right from the get  go that a lot of the characters are going to die and it shows you exactly who is going to die at least certain of them. Anyway which of course means that you're probably going to actively avoid getting attached to these characters even if the game could get you attached to them all the while it is trying but failing miserably to throw in the war is hell idea when you've got ragdolls going all over the place an incredibly goofy manner and you've got your squad mates running around like headless chickens even though you're ordering them to do some very simple tasks.

The gameplay itself actively goes against what game attempts to do by means of its story. It tries to get you attached to these characters say you're responsible for them and then they die in the actual gameplay mechanics and yet they are resurrected magically in the next level because it wasn't their time to die. Yet they only die in scripted sequences which the game really likes to throw at you by the way it's not quite as bad as say most modern military shooters but it does throw quite a few scripted sequences at you and it does force you into quite a lot of cutscenes and while you can skip the pre rendered cutscenes if you want the in game cutscenes cannot be skipped.

So the game is basically constantly shoving the story in your face whether you want it to be there or not which of course makes it harder to concentrate solely on the gameplay mechanics if for some other lis baffling reason you find them satisfying because this is supposed to be a tactical first person shooter which implies that it's supposed to be a first person shooter where you have squad command. Well you don't really command a squad so much as you command a bunch of morons who run around like headless chickens they I path finding is pretty bad so it is not remotely uncommon to have your guys get stuck on scenery or to get them stuck in what are basically invisible walls which there are quite a few invisible walls.

The extent of your tactical abilities in Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30, that's pretty true dove life that's what real tactics are all about right well no not entirely. I mean that's a big chunk of it sure but there's also things like setting up ambushes or stealth neither of which the game accommodates so you end up just doing the exact same thing every single level you get. One squad into cover you get them suppressing a target you either get the second squad or yourself into a flanking position and attack the enemy that is being suppressed mow them down move to the next area repeat ad nauseam about the only variety you actually get is that in some levels you get access to a tank instead of simply infantry which means that you can take out heavier targets machine gun nests or other tanks.

There's no complex to do the tactics whatsoever you just get one squad suppressing the other squad attacking and that's it and the worst part about it is it isn't even clever about the ways it implements this the levels are all very very linear with only a few kind of open arenas for you to mess around with even with those the opportunities for cover and advancement are painfully obvious but oddly enough the squad control itself isn't the game's biggest problem it's that it fails completely as a first person shooter in and of itself.

Every single weapon in the game operates on cone of fire mechanics now this was actually a deliberate design choice by the developers to emphasize the tactical combat instead of having you go in guns blazing but there's a pretty nasty problem with that first off the cone of fire itself is frustrating to deal with because you're aiming down your sights trying to get some accurate shots in and your bullets are simply not going where the sights are pointing. Seconds they put in some very hefty sights weighing so you never actually have anything resembling an accurate shot this means that even when you're at very close range it can take anywhere from a couple of rounds all the way up to several clips.

Worth of ammo to actually take that enemy down this is compounded by the fact they introduced a sort of suppression mechanic where when you're being shot at your view actually jerks all over the place so when you're trying to aim down your sights and you're getting suppressed. The thing is that instead of instilling the idea that oh I need to rely on my squads this makes you more frustrated than anything else because you're sitting there trying to make do with the boneheads you've been assigned as your squad just flailing around like idiots and trying to take down enemies.

So they don't get mowed down and that's why turning things a lot difficult for you in the long run and you're just sitting there wasting tons and tons tons of ammo trying to do. It it's an instance of the developer deliberately designing the game a certain way to try to instill a certain play style only to have it completely backfire on them and become infuriating.

Final Words

The actual gameplay mechanics and the plot that they're trying to go for you end up with just a complete disaster. Now I don't know how the multi players maybe the multiplayer was better than the single player but the multiplayer is unplayable now uses the same setup that say Raven shield and Splinter Cell chaos theory used which was shut down years ago. Maybe you can get some work around going with virtual connections and playing it on the land mode but that's more of a hassle than it's worth. People liking this game to only two reasons the first being nostalgia and the second being that it's one of relatively few World War two tactical shooters and for one that's spouting off about how it is unparalleled in imagery authenticity sound and gameplay it's got some rather and imagery that we've all seen before some rather pathetic authenticity even wimpier sound effects and downright terrible gameplay and how anyone manages to enjoy this piece of garbage is completely beyond me.
